Adults May Retain Flat Feet From Birth

The medical term for flat feet is called pes planus. It is defined as a non-existent arch in the foot, and the majority of babies are born with this condition. The arch generally develops in the teenage years, and some adults never develop an arch. This is often a genetic trait, or it may happen from a foot injury. Additionally, medical conditions may lead to getting flat feet, consisting of rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, and pregnancy. Some patients experience symptoms of flat feet, and these can include foot pain where the arch would be and swell on the inside of the ankle. The pain may get worse when activity is pursued, and the gait or walking style may be affected. Some patients find mild relief when specific stretches are performed, in addition to wearing custom-made orthotics. If you have flat feet, it is suggested that you confer with a podiatrist who can help you with relief techniques.

Conditions & Problems:

Having flat feet makes it difficult to run or walk because of the stress placed on the ankles.

Alignment – The general alignment of your legs can be disrupted, because the ankles move inward which can cause major discomfort.

Knees – If you have complications with your knees, flat feet can be a contributor to arthritis in that area.

Symptoms

  • Pain around the heel or arch area
  • Trouble standing on the tip toe
  • Swelling around the inside of the ankle
  • Flat look to one or both feet
  • Having your shoes feel uneven when worn

Treatment

If you are experiencing pain and stress on the foot you may weaken the posterior tibial tendon, which runs around the inside of the ankle.

Ingrown toenails can be painful and can make wearing shoes or walking uncomfortable. Seek professional help if you believe you've developed an ingrown toenail and be treated safely.

There are many issues pertaining to the feet that diabetic patients may have to contend with. Nerve damage, circulatory issues, and diabetic foot ulcers are a few common ailments, and practicing everyday foot care is crucial to implement. Nerve damage is another name for neuropathy and it causes the inability to feel existing cuts and scrapes that develop on the bottom of the feet. A mirror is an effective tool to use to look at the soles of the feet. Also many people will ask a family member or caregiver to inspect the feet. A cut that is left untreated may become infected and this can be a result of elevated blood sugar levels in the bloodstream. When daily foot care is practiced, the risk of getting unwanted foot conditions may be reduced. Proper foot care consists of getting the toenails trimmed weekly, removing corns and calluses, and wearing shoes and socks at all times. It is strongly advised that diabetic patients are under the care of a podiatrist who can help them manage this condition and offer effective foot care practices.

Diabetic foot care is important in preventing foot ailments such as ulcers. Ways to Avoid Ankle Sprains When Running

Runners are always at risk of ankle sprains, but some experts have identified ways to help prevent them. The first is to improve your balance and proprioception. Second is to wear the proper shoes for the type of running you are doing, and last is wearing some kind of supportive device on the ankle when needed. Proprioception is simply being aware of the position of your body within your surroundings, key to avoiding sprains. Improving balance and coordination through specific exercise is thought to be the best way to achieve this. Footwear for runners is paramount. Lightweight, comfortable, and being suited to your foot shape are the main considerations. Shoes needed for long-distance and trail running may differ, but ankle support is a large factor in each. Research has indicated that ankle wrapping and bracing can help to prevent ankle sprains, especially if you have incurred previous injuries. For more information, please visit a podiatrist.

All runners should take extra precaution when trying to avoid injury. If you have any concerns about your feet, contact one of our podiatrists of The Sun Healthcare & Surgery Group. Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

How to Prevent Running Injuries

There are a lot of mistakes a runner can make prior to a workout that can induce injury. A lot of athletes tend to overstretch before running, instead of saving those workouts for a post-run routine. Deep lunges and hand-to-toe hamstring pulls should be performed after a workout instead of during a warmup. Another common mistake is jumping into an intense routine before your body is physically prepared for it. You should try to ease your way into long-distance running instead of forcing yourself to rush into it.

More Tips for Preventing Injury

  • Incorporate Strength Training into Workouts - This will help improve the body’s overall athleticism
  • Improve and Maintain Your Flexibility – Stretching everyday will help improve overall performance
  • “Warm Up” Before Running and “Cool Down” Afterward – A warm up of 5-10 minutes helps get rid of lactic acid in the muscles and prevents delayed muscle soreness
  • Cross-Training is Crucial
  • Wear Proper Running Shoes
  • Have a Formal Gait Analysis – Poor biomechanics can easily cause injury

Baseball Foot Injuries

Often when an athlete engages in a particular sport, they make themselves more susceptible to specific kinds of foot injuries and afflictions. For example, baseball players have a specific set of foot conditions that they can develop. Baseball players wear cleats, which can sometimes create complications in the forefoot area. Such complications might affect the sesamoids and exacerbate neuromas. Since baseball players also engage in a significant amount of running when fielding balls and dashing from base to base, a baseball player might also be susceptible to an ankle sprain. If you are a baseball player that is neglecting the health of your feet, do not take any chances. See a podiatrist today for evaluation and treatment of any potential problems.

Sports related foot and ankle injuries require proper treatment before players can go back to their regular routines. For more information, contact one of our podiatrists of The Sun Healthcare & Surgery Group. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Sports Related Foot and Ankle Injuries

Foot and ankle injuries are a common occurrence when it comes to athletes of any sport. While many athletes dismiss the initial aches and pains, the truth is that ignoring potential foot and ankle injuries can lead to serious problems. As athletes continue to place pressure and strain the area further, a mild injury can turn into something as serious as a rupture and may lead to a permanent disability. There are many factors that contribute to sports related foot and ankle injuries, which include failure to warm up properly, not providing support or wearing bad footwear. Common injuries and conditions athletes face, including:

  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Plantar Fasciosis
  • Achilles Tendinitis
  • Achilles Tendon Rupture
  • Ankle Sprains

Sports related injuries are commonly treated using the RICE method. This includes rest, applying ice to the injured area, compression and elevating the ankle. More serious sprains and injuries may require surgery, which could include arthroscopic and reconstructive surgery. Rehabilitation and therapy may also be required in order to get any recovering athlete to become fully functional again. Any unusual aches and pains an athlete sustains must be evaluated by a licensed, reputable medical professional.

A proper diagnosis for patients who have poor circulation can consist of undergoing a physical examination, which can determine what the pulse and temperature are of the feet. This is often compared to the blood pressure in the arms, and is lower in the feet with existing poor circulation. This is then followed by checking the pulse in the entire leg, including the groin, ankles, and the back of the knees. Many times, physical tests are performed that can consist of the leg-elevation test and the leg-drop test. The first test involves lying on your back with your legs raised, and poor blood flow is evident when the leg becomes pale and painful. This is followed by performing the next test. Poor circulation is indicated when the leg will take longer to turn red while lowering the feet to the floor. This condition can be a serious ailment that often affects the feet. If this applies to you, it is advised that you speak with a podiatrist sooner rather than later who can guide you toward the correct treatment.

While poor circulation itself isn’t a condition; it is a symptom of another underlying health condition you may have. If you have any concerns with poor circulation in your feet contact one of our podiatrists of The Sun Healthcare & Surgery Group. Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

Poor Circulation in the Feet

Peripheral artery disease (PAD) can potentially lead to poor circulation in the lower extremities. PAD is a condition that causes the blood vessels and arteries to narrow. In a linked condition called atherosclerosis, the arteries stiffen up due to a buildup of plaque in the arteries and blood vessels. These two conditions can cause a decrease in the amount of blood that flows to your extremities, therefore resulting in pain.

Symptoms

Some of the most common symptoms of poor circulation are:

  • Numbness
  • Tingling
  • Throbbing or stinging pain in limbs
  • Pain
  • Muscle Cramps

Treatment for poor circulation often depends on the underlying condition that causes it. Methods for treatment may include insulin for diabetes, special exercise programs, surgery for varicose veins, or compression socks for swollen legs.

As always, see a podiatrist as he or she will assist in finding a regimen that suits you. A podiatrist can also prescribe you any needed medication.
