Causes and Symptoms of Overpronation

Foot pronation is the natural inward and outward movement of the foot while walking or running. In some cases, it can lead to over-pronation, where the foot excessively rolls inward, which affects gait and weight distribution. Overpronation may begin in childhood as a result of underdeveloped arches, or develop in adulthood due to arch collapse. Causes include genetics, foot deformities, and injuries. Obesity, and conditions like diabetes or arthritis, are other factors in developing pronation problems. Symptoms include pain, swelling, and related foot disorders such as plantar fasciitis or shin splints. Diagnosis involves examination, gait analysis, and imaging tests conducted by a podiatrist. If you have developed signs of overpronation, it is suggested that you make an appointment with a podiatrist for an exam and treatment options that are best for you.

Biomechanics in Podiatry

Podiatric biomechanics is a particular sector of specialty podiatry with licensed practitioners who are trained to diagnose and treat conditions affecting the foot, ankle and lower leg. Biomechanics deals with the forces that act against the body, causing an interference with the biological structures. It focuses on the movement of the ankle, the foot and the forces that interact with them.

A History of Biomechanics

  • Biomechanics dates back to the BC era in Egypt where evidence of professional foot care has been recorded.
  • In 1974, biomechanics gained a higher profile from the studies of Merton Root, who claimed that by changing or controlling the forces between the ankle and the foot, corrections or conditions could be implemented to gain strength and coordination in the area.

Modern technological improvements are based on past theories and therapeutic processes that provide a better understanding of podiatric concepts for biomechanics. Computers can provide accurate information about the forces and patterns of the feet and lower legs.

Understanding biomechanics of the feet can help improve and eliminate pain, stopping further stress to the foot.

Exploring Ankle Replacement Surgery

Ankle replacement surgery, a procedure designed to alleviate severe ankle pain and restore function, involves replacing damaged parts of the ankle joint with artificial components. This surgical intervention is typically recommended for individuals with advanced arthritis, significant joint damage, or debilitating pain that has not responded to conservative treatments. During the procedure, the podiatric surgeon removes damaged bone and cartilage from the ankle joint and replaces them with prosthetic components made of metal and plastic, mimicking the natural structure and function of the joint. Ankle replacement surgery aims to reduce pain, improve mobility, and enhance overall quality of life for individuals struggling with chronic ankle issues. Following surgery, patients undergo a period of rehabilitation to regain strength, flexibility, and range of motion in the ankle. If you are experiencing chronic ankle pain, it is suggested that you consult a podiatrist who can determine if ankle replacement is right for you.

Foot surgery is sometimes necessary to treat a foot ailment. To learn more, contact one of our podiatrists of The Sun Healthcare & Surgery Group. Our doctors will assist you with all of your foot and ankle needs.

When Is Surgery Necessary?

Foot and ankle surgery is generally reserved for cases in which less invasive, conservative procedures have failed to alleviate the problem. Some of the cases in which surgery may be necessary include:

  • Removing foot deformities like bunions and bone spurs
  • Severe arthritis that has caused bone issues
  • Cosmetic reconstruction

What Types of Surgery Are There?

The type of surgery you receive will depend on the nature of the problem you have. Some of the possible surgeries include:

  • Bunionectomy for painful bunions
  • Surgical fusion for realignment of bones
  • Neuropathy decompression surgery to treat nerve damage

Benefits of Surgery

Although surgery is usually a last resort, it can provide more complete pain relief compared to non-surgical methods and may allow you to finally resume full activity.

Surgical techniques have also become increasingly sophisticated. Techniques like endoscopic surgery allow for smaller incisions and faster recovery times.

Tendonitis and Foot and Ankle Pain

Tendonitis of the foot and ankle can cause discomfort and pain, often due to overuse or injury. The tendons that connect muscles to bones become inflamed, leading to symptoms like swelling and aching. There are various types of tendonitis affecting different parts of the foot and ankle, including Achilles tendonitis, posterior tibial tendonitis, peroneal tendonitis, flexor tendonitis, and extensor tendonitis. Achilles tendonitis typically results from increased activity levels, new sports, or wearing ill-fitting footwear. It generally responds well to conservative treatments. Posterior tibial tendonitis is associated with flat feet and may require braces or orthotics. Peroneal tendonitis affects the outer ankle and can be linked to high-arched feet and previous ankle sprains. Flexor tendonitis is common among dancers and those who balance on their toes, while extensor tendonitis is often caused by friction with tight shoes or certain medical conditions. Common causes include overuse, abnormal foot structure, trauma, or underlying medical conditions such as arthritis. Diagnosis involves medical history, X-rays, or MRI scans to determine the extent of the injury. If you have tendon pain in the foot or ankle, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist for a proper diagnosis and treatment, and to learn about prevention measures.

Ankle pain can be caused by a number of problems and may be potentially serious. If you have ankle pain, consult with one of our podiatrists from The Sun Healthcare & Surgery Group. Our doctors will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.

Ankle pain is any condition that causes pain in the ankle. Due to the fact that the ankle consists of tendons, muscles, bones, and ligaments, ankle pain can come from a number of different conditions.

Causes

The most common causes of ankle pain include:

  • Types of arthritis (rheumatoid, osteoarthritis, and gout)
  • Ankle sprains
  • Broken ankles
  • Achilles tendonitis
  • Achilles tendon rupture
  • Stress fractures
  • Bursitis
  • Tarsal tunnel syndrome
  • Plantar fasciitis

Symptoms

Symptoms of ankle injury vary based upon the condition. Pain may include general pain and discomfort, swelling, aching, redness, bruising, burning or stabbing sensations, and/or loss of sensation.

Diagnosis

Due to the wide variety of potential causes of ankle pain, podiatrists will utilize a number of different methods to properly diagnose ankle pain. This can include asking for personal and family medical histories and of any recent injuries. Further diagnosis may include sensation tests, a physical examination, and potentially x-rays or other imaging tests.

Treatment

Just as the range of causes varies widely, so do treatments. Some more common treatments are rest, ice packs, keeping pressure off the foot, orthotics and braces, medication for inflammation and pain, and surgery.

Causes of Falls in Older Adults

Falls among older adults are a common concern, with more than one in four individuals aged 65 or older experiencing a fall each year. Numerous factors contribute to falls in older adults, including age-related changes, such as diminished vision, hearing, reflexes, and muscle mass, all of which can impact balance. Additionally, medical conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, neuropathy, and thyroid disorders often compromise stability. Other factors include mobility issues such as gait abnormalities, muscle weakness, and abrupt changes in blood pressure. Medications can increase the risk of falls by inducing side effects like dizziness or confusion. Foot problems, including painful conditions and wearing unsuitable footwear, such as high heels or backless shoes, further add to the likelihood of falling. Environmental factors, consisting of slippery floors or inadequate lighting at home or in the community, also pose significant hazards. Prevention tips include seeking appropriate medical care, wearing supportive footwear, and creating a safe living environment. If concerns about foot health or falls prevention arise, it is suggested that you seek guidance from a podiatrist who is medically trained to manage these concerns.

Preventing falls among the elderly is very important. If you are older and have fallen or fear that you are prone to falling, consult with one of our podiatrists from The Sun Healthcare & Surgery Group. Our doctors will assess your condition and provide you with quality advice and care.

Every 11 seconds, an elderly American is being treated in an emergency room for a fall related injury. Falls are the leading cause of head and hip injuries for those 65 and older. Due to decreases in strength, balance, senses, and lack of awareness, elderly persons are very susceptible to falling. Thankfully, there are a number of things older persons can do to prevent falls.

How to Prevent Falls

Some effective methods that older persons can do to prevent falls include:

  • Enrolling in strength and balance exercise program to increase balance and strength
  • Periodically having your sight and hearing checked
  • Discuss any medications you have with a doctor to see if it increases the risk of falling
  • Clearing the house of falling hazards and installing devices like grab bars and railings
  • Utilizing a walker or cane
  • Wearing shoes that provide good support and cushioning
  • Talking to family members about falling and increasing awareness

Falling can be a traumatic and embarrassing experience for elderly persons; this can make them less willing to leave the house, and less willing to talk to someone about their fears of falling. Doing such things, however, will increase the likelihood of tripping or losing one’s balance. Knowing the causes of falling and how to prevent them is the best way to mitigate the risk of serious injury.
